Everyday Habits That Can Sabotage Productivity

1) Fast food and junk food.

Eating only salad and salad alone everyday is impossible. I understand all of that. But I am still amazed at the sheer number of people who refuse to acknowledge there is a link between food not only with your weight or aesthetics, but also your energy and mood levels. Garbage in is garbage out but no one can put 2 and 2 together. If you eat a ton of food – you want to lay down. And that doesn’t jive with work. So eat the majority of your food during dinner. Keep your meals small and simple during lunch to be a lean, mean, focused machine. Eat healthy to be healthy. Healthy people have tons of energy – just look at Jack LaLanne.

2) Facebook and other social media.

I know, old man is yelling at clouds again. There is nothing inherently wrong with social media. But what can happen is bad habits forming over-time due to prolonged use of social media. If your phone is being pinged with notifications all day long it is hard to stay productive. How can you get into flow if you are constantly checking your phone? What is more, you find some interesting link, and the next thing you know you have 15 new tabs open. Make conscious effort to browse social media only during set times in your day and you won’t feel guilty about using it. If it is not interfering with work social media is not a problem. But the question is if.

3) Television and/or streaming movies.

This is a big one for me personally. Sometimes you feel like you have to be in the loop and follow all the popular TV shows so you can be part of conversations. With streaming it is very easy to start binging content, especially now when certain shows release all episodes of a season in one go. I find that the best strategy to avoid mindless TV or streaming use is to have a mini plan to watch all the content, set time in your calendar if needed. Just do it consciously and be aware that watching something is time that is possibly being taken away from other tasks.
